Comments: This recording captures The Baseball Project "supergroup" during its July 4th date in the Chicago suburbs promoting its fourth album, "Grand Salami Time." Composed of members from R.E.M., The Minus 5, and the Dream Syndicate, this project's entire catalog features songs about major league baseball from all periods of the "modern era" going back to the early 1900's. The shows tend to be loose and fun -- you can tell this is a "passion project" for all of the band members. You can tell from watching them that they are just enjoying playing uninhibited live music in front of longtime fans.
This particular show seems a bit long relative to their normal sets. The recordings I've downloaded and shows I've attended have them clocked in at around 100 minutes' playing time, so 120 minutes seems a bit of an outlier.
In terms of sound quality, this one is pretty solid for a club setting. I was directly in line with the left PA and caught a pretty good mix; my neighbors for the most part were very courteous. During the first set, I needed to move around a bit because there was a very chatty young woman in front of me (luckily, she is much less audible than I expected she would be). In the second set, I was in front of her (i.e. obscured from my mics) and locked in. I'm happy with this recording overall. |
